APEX Race 2011
This will be my hardest challenge to date, but here is some info and a few pictures of what I have been up to in the past...
So far 2011 has been very exciting. In May I took on my first proper expedition adventure race. The APEX Alpine Adventure race in Switzerland was a four day non-stop race including running, canyoning, mountain biking and kayaking. After injuries to Team Accelerate members I joined another team, and following a dramatic helicopter rescue when one member suffered hypothermia within 6km of the finish, we were glad to finish 20th.
Despite saying the APEX would be my only expedition race, in August I took part in the Raid in France race. This time we were entirely self-sufficient for 30hr+ sections of the course, and this was a seriously hard race. We finished 10th. Just before France I also took part in the Fastnet ocean Yacht race, another amazing experience which I can't do justice in the space here: Reports on both are on the blog!

In 2010 I focused on Ultrarunning again, taking on four races in the UK series as well as the famous Bob Graham Round. I managed top ten finishes in the Calderdale Hike, Lakeland 100 and Pumlumon Challenge, and finished the Bob Graham on my 25th birthday in 22:30, with seven runners from Pudsey and Bramley AC. Both the Lakeland 100 and BG are up there with the best runs (and days!) of my life.

The British Isles Challenge - Rather than the traditional Land's End to John O'Groats, I planned a human-powered journey from the southernmost point of the Scilly Isles to the northernmost point of Shetland. The plan was to travel by kayak, running, mountain and road bike and swimming. The logistics of the challenge forced some changes but I completed a 1400 mile journey from Scilly to Orkney via the three peaks, and raised over £3,000 for charity.
The "Grand Slam" of the UK Ultra running championships. I ran all 12 races in the UK series, ranging from 31 to 62 miles in distance, none were easy but some (like the epic Fellsman) were truly tough. A total of 471 miles. I was the second ever to complete the grand slam, with Karen McDonald being the third about an hour or so later. I also managed to win the maximum points category, with Mark Hartell winning the overall series.

The Mongol Rally - Doug Tunney and I drove about 4000 miles from London to Kazakhstan in a 1 litre Suzuki Jeep. In the end most of the second piston big end came out of the exhaust, but before that we had nursed her across France, Germany, Czech Rep, Solvakia, Ukraine, Russia and were 100 miles from Mongolia. I will never forget towing another competitor across the Aral desert, one day making four miles through the sand. A proper adventure.
In 2007 I also set a record for crossing the UK on foot by running across Hadrians Wall Path in just over 23 hours. Some videos on YouTube (a bit overdramatic in places!) here.
